What is Schizophrenia?
  • Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder classified separately from other disorders because it is not easily categorized as an anxiety or mood disorder
  • Schizophrenia is characterized by the inability to separate reality form a non-reality
  • Patients often experience non-existent stimuli that create perceptions of things that do not exist such as voices.

  • Symptoms may include:
      • Exhibiting no emotions
      • Delusions
      • Hallucination
      • Disorganized thinking
causes
Causes
  • Multiple possible factors to have been discovered:
      • Genetics – more likely to develop schizophrenia if they have an identical twin with schizophrenia
      • Women infected with the influenza virus during their pregnancy are more likely to give birth to a child who will develop schizophrenia
      • Schizophrenics’ brain also contains larger fluid-filled areas

Types of Schizophrenia
  • Five types of schizophrenia:
    • Catatonic – Little to no movement, possibly vegetative state
    • Disorganized – Common; disorganized thinking, flat effect, inappropriate emotions or behaviors
    • Paranoid – Common; delusions, hallucinations, false beliefs of grandeur
    • Residual – Long term, most symptoms have disappeared, left with flat effect or refusal to talk
    • Undifferentiated – Not fitting one of the above, suffers from symptoms of multiple types

  • Antipsychotic drugs – most effective in treating SYMPTOMS
  • Therapy
  • Counseling
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Self help groups

  • Jack graduated from high school and got a job working in a video store. After working for about 6 months Jack began to hear voices
  • During the past 7 years Jack was hospitalized 5 times.
