Schizophrenia. Definition. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that effects the brain that makes the person view reality abnormally. This can consist of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. Types.

  1. Schizophrenia

  2. Definition Schizophrenia is a mental illness that effects the brain that makes the person view reality abnormally. This can consist of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior.

  3. Types There are five different types of schizophrenia. The first is called “Paranoid type”. This type of schizophrenia suffers from hallucinations and delusions. With this type the person can be very anxious, angry, or paranoid. The second is called “Disorganized type”. This type of disorder is characterized to have a lot of “word salad” and disorganized thoughts. They often have inappropriate emotions to different activities. The third is called “Catatonic type”. This type of disorder is known for being extremely immobile. They may not speak at all. The fourth type is called “Undifferentiated type”. This type is a mixture of symptoms that were stated above and is hard to diagnose them into one group. The last one is called “Residual type”. This type is characterized is having experiencing one episode of schizophrenia but no longer demonstrates any symptoms.

  4. Symptoms (positive) Delusions. This is a symptom that causes beliefs that are not realistic and can cause misinterpretation of an experience. Hallucinations. This is a symptom of hearing or seeing things that don’t actually exist. This can effect any type of sensory but hearing voices is the most common. Disorganized thinking. This is a symptom where the person has trouble staying on one topic, making sentences that don’t make sense. This is type of sentence combination is called “word salad”. Disorganized behavior. This is a symptom where the person’s behavior does not match up appropriately with the situation, like laughing at a funeral.

  5. Symptoms (negative) Inability to initiate goals. Poor hygiene habits. Poor social skills. Seem to lack emotions.

  6. Who does it effect? Symptoms of schizophrenia for men start developing between the ages of 18 – 25. For women, the most crucial ages are from 25 – 30’s.

  7. Treatment The main approach to treating schizophrenia is to administer antipsychotic drugs. Since this is a brain chemistry disorder, therapy alone will not help someone with this disease. However, medication along with therapy is the most beneficial solution to living with schizophrenia.
