  2. Why Would People Think Latin Is a “Dead Language”? • Today, in our modern society, we don’t speak fluent Latin to one another. We might speak other languages that comes from the Latin language, such as English, Italian and Greek. • Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, the one which was used in the Roman Catholic liturgy and nowadays it is the language of the Vatican State in Italy. As there are no native speakers of it, Latin is spoken only as a second language. • So if we don’t speak fluent Latin to each other,shouldn’t it be considered “dead”? • No, because the language is all around us and we don’t even know it.

Where do we see the Latin Language? • We see/ hear Latin in church -Back in the time of our parents and grandparents, all church masses used to be in Latin -In some churches, they have Latin sayings written on the stained glass windows. -In cathedrals, there is usual at least one Latin saying on the altar.

  4. Where does Latin come from? • People may think Latin is a “dead language” because people of ancient Rome used it as their common language. • Because of that, Latin makes itself a huge base on World History, meaning that when we learn about the Romans, we learn about their language, too. • Just because people spoke Latin centuries ago, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be used today.

How does Latin help us today? • Latin helps us today in ways we don’t even realize • We excel in the English language by learning what English words come from Latin words. -For Example: Strenua-Strength; infinem-infintity (forever) We also learn more about English grammar, and how to use it correctly when we translate -For Example: Infinitive/Complementary Verbs; Transitive/Intransitive Verbs; Subjects/Direct Objects

  6. Conclusion • Therefore, the Latin language is NOT “dead” • We use it every day, and we don’t even realize it! • We see it daily, and our modern society is built on the Latin language
