Human Respiratory System. 1. Air enters the mouth and the nostrils where it is moistened by the structures of the nasal passage (nasal conchae ). 2. Air passes successively through the pharynx, the glottis, and the larynx.

1. Air enters the mouth and the nostrils where it is moistened by the structures of the nasal passage (nasal conchae).
2. Air passes successively through the pharynx,the glottis, and the larynx.
3. After passing through the larynx, air goes down the flexible tube of the trachea.
4. About the level of your armpit, the trachea branches into two smaller passageways called bronchi.
5. Each bronchus (pl. bronchi) subdivides many times to produce a network of finer and finer tubes called bronchioles. Both are lined with ciliated mucous membranes.
6. Bronchioles end in a grape-like cluster of tiny sacs called alveoli (s. alveolus). It is these sacs, which are always kept moist, that the actual exchange of gas takes place.
7. Once gas exchange occurs, gaseous ‘waste’ is exhaled in the complete opposite order as that listed above.
