  3. Indian Removal Act (1830) • Authorized by Andrew Jackson • 5 civilized tribes • Forced to leave

  4. Trail of Tears (1838 – 1839) • Marched to Oklahoma • Horrible, traumatizing conditions (barefoot and no blankets provided) • About 20,000 died

  5. 14th Amendment (1868) • Excluded Native Americans • No citizenship • No freedoms/rights of citizens

  6. General Allotment Act (1887) • Reservations were divided up • Auctioned for sale • Broke up tribes

  7. Fighting Modern Discrimination

  8. Snyder Act (1924) • Improved reservation conditions • Taught new farming/irrigation methods • Stopped Americanizing Indians

  9. Indian Citizenship Act (1924) • Gained citizenship • Freedom to travel • Able to vote

  10. Indian Reorganization Act (1934) • Wheeler-Howard Act • Some reservation land returned to tribes • Money donated for education

  11. Indian Claims Commission (1946) • Authorized by Harry Truman • Awarded money for lost land • Indians could make claims until 1951

  12. Law Against Indian Discrimination • Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Title VII • No workplace/employment discrimination (firing, hiring, benefits, etc.)

  20. Gloria Kellogg • Has been discriminated: in a restaurant in Stillwater a few years ago, and in a restaurant in Amarillo • Her son has to go through extra security at airports because of his dark skin • Is major, all types are major

  21. Adam Cagle • Has not been discriminated against • It’s not a huge deal for people • Main discrimination is African Americans and Whites

  22. Maegan Needham • Has not been discriminated against • People don’t know, it’s not a big deal • Doesn’t know another, not too major
