Cellular Respiration. Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy occurs in the Mitochondria of the cell shape of the mitochondria is important! ALL cells undergo some type of cellular respiration because ALL cells need energy to grow and reproduce.

  1. Cellular Respiration Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy occurs in the Mitochondria of the cell shape of the mitochondria is important! ALL cells undergo some type of cellular respiration because ALL cells need energy to grow and reproduce

  2. Most of Cellular Respiration occurs in the Mitochondria

  3. Aerobic Respiration – with oxygen • More efficient • Yields 38 ATP molecules • 66% of the energy from a glucose molecule becomes ATP the rest is heat energy • happens in a series of reactions.

  4. 1.Glycolysis – in cytoplasm • Glucose is broken in half -> 2 Pyruvates • 2 ATPs are made • 2 NADHs are made

  5. 2. Formation ofAcetyl Coenzyme A (in mitochondria matrix) • Each pyruvate is broken down into Acetly CoA and Carbon dioxide.

  6. 3.Krebs Cycle • Takes place in the mitochondria matrix • Each Acetyl CoA is broken down the rest of the way, into carbon dioxide and ATP

  7. 4.Electron Transport System • Process by which the electrons and protons (H+) are removed from the 3 previous stages to make LOTS of ATP • The electrons and hydrogens bond with Oxygen to make Water.

  8. Anaerobic Respiration • Without oxygen • Less efficient • Still begins with glycolysis • Types of Anaerobic Respiration • Alcoholic Fermentation – instead of glucose completely breaking down it is broken down into ethyl alcohol and Carbon dioxide. Only 2 ATPs

Types of Anaerobic Respiration • Lactic Acid Fermentation - in Muscle Cells • When our muscles are deprived of oxygen they produce lactic acid instead of completely breaking down glucose. • An increase in lactic acid causes the pH of our blood to decrease, causing muscle fatigue, pain, etc. • Lactic Acid- later broken down by the liver. • Again only 2 ATPs are produced

  10. Types of Anaerobic Respiration • Some bacteria use nitrite or sulfate instead of oxygen in breaking down sugars for energy
