Cellular Respiration ‘In a Nutshell’
CELLULAR RESPIRATION 1. ConvertsglucoseintoATP energy.
Overview of Respiration • All organisms respire! • ATP is synthesized & the energy will be used for cellular processes: active transport, making proteins, etc… Two Types: -Aerobic (oxygen is present). Occurs in mitochondria -Anaerobic (oxygen is not present)
CELLULAR RESPIRATION Cellular respiration equation C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Energy Glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + ATP energy
STEPS of RESPIRATION 1.Glycolysis - anaerobic 2. Krebs cycle- aerobic 3. Electron Transport Chain (ETC) - aerobic
Step 1: GLYCOLYSIS • Glucose is Broken Down (oxidized) to 2 pyruvates. • Occurs in the CYTOPLASM • ANAEROBIC! All organisms undergo glycolysis • Produces 2 ATP and 2 pyruvate. 2 NADH carry electrons to Electron Transport Chain
Step 2: KREB’S CYCLE (CITRIC ACID CYLE) • Occurs in the mitochondria: IT’SAEROBIC! • Both Pyruvates go in • 2 ATP and 6 CO2 come out • 6 NADH and 2 FADH2 carry electrons to the ETC
Step 3: ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN • Occurs in the mitochondria: it’sAEROBIC! • Produces 32 ATP using the electrons provided by Glycolysis AND the Krebs Cycle & carried by NADH & FADH2 36 total ATP molecules are produced during cellular respiration from one glucose molecule! 2 ATP- Glycolysis; 2 ATP- Kreb’s; 32 ATP-ETC
If there’s NO OXYGEN, respiration is ANAEROBIC. After glycolysis, there’sFERMENTATION!!!Only the 2 ATP from glycolysis are produced. No more from Fermentation! The 2 pyruvic acid (pyruvate) molecules from Glycolysis go through fermentation. 2 kinds of fermentation:Lactic acid fermentation: pyruvic acid -> lactic acidoccurs in animals; ex.: muscle “pain” from too much exercise, yogurtAlcoholic fermentation: pyruvic acid -> ethyl alcoholoccurs in yeast and some bacteria; ex.: alcoholic beverages, bread
How photosynthesis & respiration relate. • Almost opposite processes • Photosynthesis produce food (store) • Respiration breaks down food (releases) • Photosynthesis uses CO2 and releases O2 • Respiration releases CO2 and uses O2
