  1. Lesson for Today One of the types of Geometry “Plane Geometry” Next

  2. Geometry Next

  3. Points • Points are the basis of all Geometry. • has no dimension, no with, no length and no thickness. Back

  4. Lines • a line is made up of an infinite number of points. • has no width and no thickness, but it has length since it extends indefinitely in opposite directions. Back

  5. Plane • Planes are two-dimensional. • has length and width, but no height, and extends infinitely on all sides. • Planes are thought of as flat surfaces, like a table top. Back

  6. Line segment • has two end points. • The two end points of the line segment are used to name the line segment. This line segment is called segment XY. Back

  7. Terms Lines Plane Points Line Segment Ray Next

  8. Ray • is part of a line. It has one end point and extends to infinity in one direction. A ray is named starting with its end point first and then any other point on the ray second. Back

  9. Plane Geometry • is all about shapes like lines, circles and triangles ... shapes that can be drawn on a flat surface called a Plane (it is like on an endless piece of paper). Next

  10. Geometry • The word geometry is Greek for geos- meaning earth and metron- meaning measure. • is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. • Geometry is one of the oldest sciences. • A major contributor to the field of geometry was Euclid - 325 BC who is typically known as the Father of Geometry and is famous for his works called The Elements. Next

  11. Practice Exercises I: • Using the graphic to the right: • Name a Line • Name a Line Segment from point V and X • Name a Ray from point V Next

  12. Exercise II • Tell if it is a Line, Point, or a Plane. • Walls • Laser Beams • Thin Curtain Rods • A pinhole on a map • Mole • Mongo seed • Tightly stretched power cables • Tabletops • ceilings and floors • Particle of dust
