3. Overeating Eating too much also causes malnutrition.
Constant overeating causes your body to store fat under the skin in a thick layer, on the organs and inside the arteries – eeurgh!
This leads to obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure
4. Extreme Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa
Obesity
5. Anorexia Nervosa “Anorexia is civil war. A civil war between mind and body. If the mind wins, the body dies”
Jill Welbourne, 1995
6. What is Anorexia Nervosa? Anorexia Nervosa is a highly complicated psychiatric disorder that includes:
Intense fear of weight gain/being fat
Highly restricted food intake and or purging behaviour
Extreme weight loss
7. Who develops AN? Anyone! Regardless of age, race, sex or background.
It dates back centuries!
Much more common in women than women, and more common in 15-25 years
More common in the West; there are 6000 new cases each year in the UK alone.
8. Symptoms Physical
Severe weight loss; loss of sexual potency; insomnia; fainting; stomach pains; tooth discolouration; growth of downy hair on body (lanugo).
Psychological
Fear of weight gain; irritability; depression and anxiety; low self esteem; impaired memory, attention, concentration; denial.
Behavioural
Avoiding food; excess exercise; ritual or deceptive behaviour; drinking more fluid; lengthy toilet visits.
9. Consequences Emaciation (wasting away)
Osteoporosis
Gastric bleeding
Reflux vomiting
Brain atrophy
Cardiovascular problems
Kidney complaints and diabetes
Bowel failure
10. What causes Anorexia Nervosa? A mixture of biological, psychological, behavioural and social factors.
Biological- is it in our genes?
Psychological- is it in our personality?
Behavioural- have we learned to do this?
Social- have external factors played a part (society, environment, friends)?
11. So what do I think the cause is? Some research has looked at identical twins that have been separated at birth. If both twins are anorexic then this would suggest that it was something in their genes that made them anorexic and not the environment.
surprisingly this is the case!
But I don’t think the other factors should be ignored. I would finish with this quote:
12.
“The gene loads the gun but the environment pulls the trigger”
13. Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia Nervosa is similar to Anorexia except sufferers tend to be of normal weight.
They have a ‘binge-purge’ cycle, usually eating lots of food and vomiting it up.
Bulimia Nervosa can affect anyone
14. Obesity Obesity occurs when someone is extremely overweight.
It affects one in five men and one in four women!
Obesity is a serious health problem as it increases the risk of heart problems and cancers and adds stress to the body’s organs and muscles.
Also causes emotional and social problems
