  3. Your Professional Affiliation • Choices: • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) • Applied Science Technologist (AScT) • Certified Technician (CTech) • Certified Tradesperson(Journeyman or other designation)

  4. Sector hierarchy & structure - Many models are well-understood by the public: • Health (Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, Administrators, Hospital Staff) • Military (Officers, NCO’s, Privates) • Justice (Judges, Lawyers, Police, Private Investigators, Corrections, bad guys) • Business (CEO, VP’s, Middle Managers, Supervisors, Administrators, Consultants, Specialists, Workers) Familiarity comes mainly from media sources

  5. Sector hierarchy & structure - This model is not well understood by the public: • Engineering (Professional Engineers, Technologists, Certified Technicians, Journeyman Tradespeople, Skilled & Unskilled Labour) Engineers & Technologists are seldom, if ever, portrayed on TV or in movies!

P.Eng or P.Geo 4 or 5 years, Degree Licensed to practice Licenses seldom required 1 to 3 years, Diploma or Certificate of Technology AScT or CTech Journeyman Tradesperson 40 weeks over 4 years Red Seal (national), or Provincial Certification Licensed to practice 10 weeks to qualify in a subtrade Skilled worker No Licensed required Sector hierarchy & structure - The Engineering Team:

Protection of the Public Canada’s Professional Associations are self-governing agencies which are mandated by Provincial Governments to ensure that their members have been: • Certified as having met defined minimum academic requirements and have proven work experience at the appropriate level, and • Registered to ensure that they work under a strict code of ethics.

  8. The associations are trying to simplify registration for IEP’s: • IEP’s now have access to fast-track registration procedures: • APEGBC & ASTTBC both offer a ‘Provisional Membership’: • Provisional Membership is for a one-year, non-renewable term.  The intention of the Provisional Membership status is to aid individuals who have been trained internationally in their search for engineering or geoscience work in a Canadian environment. This membership will also act as an identifier for companies reviewing candidates for employment. • Professional status may be granted to the Provisional Member once he or she has completed the year of Canadian experience, pending a final satisfactory review and approval through APEGBC or ASTTBC registration channels. • APEGBC began offering Provisional Membership status on January 1st, 2004. • ASTTBC began offering Provisional Membership status in February, 2007..
