  2. The Historical Event • During the time (1962) another big crisis that was going on was the Cold War. • The Cold War was a conflict that pitted the United States against the Soviet Union. • Both the two nations never confronted each other on the battlefield directly.

  3. Background to the Crisis • Cuba was taken over by the Communist and became a communist country. • Which started the Cuban missile crisis. • The Cuban missile crisis started in October 1962 which was Kennedy’s most serious confrontation with the Soviets. • Fidel Castro the leader of the Cuban missile crisis believed that the United States planned another attack on Cuba, and asked for more Soviet military aid.

  4. What are the Options ? • One of the options John F. Kennedy had was that he negotiated with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. • Another option was that he ordered a blockade for the Cubans. • Finally the last option was that he warned the Russians that any missile attacks from Cuba would be considered an attack from Soviet Russia and bring "a full retaliatory response" from the United States against Russia itself.

  5. The Decision • The decision John F. Kennedy made was that he on October 22 he announced the discovery of the missile installations to the public and the decision he made was to quarantine the island. • He also announced that if any nuclear missile launched from Cuba would be regarded as an attack on the United States by the Soviet Union and demanded that the Soviets remove all of their offensive weapons from Cuba.

  6. The Result • After the decision tensions began to build on both sides. Kennedy pulled the quarantine line back and raised military readiness. But on October 27, a U-2 was shot down over Cuba. • On October 28 tensions finally began to ease when Khrushchev announced that he would dismantle the installations and return the missiles to the Soviet Union.

  7. Hindsight • Further negotiations to place to implement the agreement on the 28th of October, including a United States demand that Soviet light bombers were to be removed from Cuba. • This impacted us Americans because this was the closest the world had come to World War 3. • I personally think that this was a good decision to make because even though they still came to a resolution the decision would have still been a success.
