MISSIONS • What is the goal of the Olympic Movement? • According to the Olympic Charter, the goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

  6. ATHLETES' OATH The oath is recited by an athlete from the host country, who holds the Olympic flag by the tip at one of its corners, surrounded by other athletes who carry the flag. "In the name of all competitors I promise that we will take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of the sport and the honour of our teams".

  9. OLYMPIC FLAG It consists of the five Olympic rings, centrally located against a white background, whose colours are blue, black, red, yellow and green. According to de Coubertin, these colours stand for all the nations in the world, since at least one of the colours on the Olympic flag features on each country's national flag.

  12. Paralympic Games In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from the Netherlands joined the games and an international movement was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960, now called Paralympics. The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games.

  13. OLYMPIC MOTTO "Citius. Altius. Fortius" Swifter, Higher, Stronger. The Olympic motto addresses itself to all of the members of the Olympic Movement calling upon them to act according to the Olympic Spirit.

  17. RECOGNISED SPORTS Climbing, bridge, golf, roller skating and surfing are sports that are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

  21. Peking 2008 On 13 July 2001 at the 112th IOC Session in Moscow, Beijing was elected the Host City for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008.

  22. Vancouver 2010 The city of Vancouver was elected Host City of the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010 at the 115th IOC Session in Prague on 2 July 2003.

  23. London 2012 The host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be the city of London. London had to overcome stiff competition, however, in the form of Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid in its bid to get the Games.

  26. Sochi 2014 Hosting the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi would be an honour for the entire country. It would leave an unprecedented sporting legacy for Russia and for the Olympic Movement forever changing the lives of Russian citizens and profoundly affecting the country's youth.
