  3. General Course Overview • This course has been designed for Biosafety Officers. Individuals attending this course will receive over 24 hours of course instruction on the following items: • Writing effective standard operating procedures (SOPs). • Identifying effective procedures for disinfection, decontamination, and sterilization. • Developing and implementing comprehensive biorisk management programs; including risk identification, risk assessments, risk management programs, and risk communication to laboratory staff. • Review four primary controls of biosafety including engineering of facilities, standard operating procedures, personal protection equipment selection, and administrative controls (training, medical/incident surveillance, SOP compliance programs). • Biosafety program management, including several tools which can be easily implemented upon returning to your organization – increasing biosafety program effectiveness. Course Instructors Dr. Henry Mathews Henry received his undergraduate education at the University of Georgia and his PhD at Emory University in the field of Parasitology.  Following a two year post-doctoral program in Medical Microbiology at CDC he joined the Parasitology Division of CDC as a Research Microbiologist.  After more than two decades as a bench scientist, he turned his attention to laboratory safety and transferred to the Biosafety Branch of the CDC Office of Health and Safety.  As the Safety Manager for the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID), Henry oversaw the biosafety program for all of the infectious disease laboratories at the CDC.  Henry oversaw the establishment of the first laboratory at CDC to be approved for work with Avian Influenza.  He was active in the design of a new laboratory building at CDC (Building 17) which was made up of BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories and was consulted by designers of containment laboratories in the US, Canada, and Europe.  Lee Alderman In 1962, Lee joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) working as a analytical chemist for 15 years. Following this position, for over two decades he then joined the Office of Health and Safety at CDC as the Assistant to the Director for Facilities where he assisted with the commissioning and operations of the BSL4 laboratory. Lee’s responsibilities included laboratory safety inspections at CDC laboratories located throughout the United States and was directly involved in providing biosafety consultation for the new construction of BSL3 and BSL4 laboratories in the United States and locations around the world. In 1993, Lee joined Emory University as the biosafety officer and served until he was named Director of Environmental Health and Safety Office and served in this position until he retired in 2005.
