  1. Book I – Situation?Odysseus is on the island of Calypso, daughter of Atlas, and the gods debate whether to let him go home. Athena supports Odysseus’ return. Odysseus Zeus

  2. Calypso loves Odysseus and wants to marry him and make him immortal. He’s been on her island for 7 years.

  3. Flash to Odysseus’ home--community on Ithaca. A crowd of suitors are wooing Penelope and becoming a drain on her household resources.

  4. Book II –Telemachus decides to go look for his father. Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, and Mentor, Athena in disguise. Penelope, Odysseus’ wife.

  5. Book III – Telemachus visits Nestor at Pylos to ask about his father. Nestor sends him to Sparta to talk with Menelaus. Telemachus leaving Nestor

  6. Book IV – Telemachus and Nestor’s son go to Menelaus in Sparta

  7. First Four Books • What do you learn indirectly about Odysseus? From the recollections of the folks in Ithaca and his comrades in arms, Nestor and Menelaus? • What do you learn from Nestor, Menelaus, and Helen about the Trojan War as they remember it? • How is Helen depicted?
