  1. Airplanes are essential to contemporary society. Planes are a fast, convenient mode of transportation for people and goods.

  2. Sukinda, India The Sukinda Valley contains 97% of India’s chromite ore deposits and is one of the largest open cast chromite ore mines in the world. Chromite is used for a variety of metal, chemical and manufactured products (ex: stainless steel).

  3. This metal plant in Norilsk, Russia has one of the world’s largest heavy metal smelting complexes and distributes products globally.

  4. Every year, about 9 billion animals are slaughtered. Abattoirs the starting point of the meat processing industry. Here, stock exists the farm and enters the food chain. Abattoirs are quick and efficient means of processing meats for consumption.

  5. There are many uses for coal and thousands of products that have coal or coal-byproducts as components. Coal is valued for its energy generation and in steel production.

  6. Nuclear Power Plants: while there is no energy source that is 100% clean, nuclear power is considered carbon-free, and produces more electricity than other renewable sources like solar and wind. Nuclear power produces more kilowatts than coal, wind or solar energy and at a smaller cost.

  7. Airplanes are inefficient, enormous and run on toxic fuels. A Boeing 747 plane uses approximately 1 gallon of fuel every second. Over the course of a 10 hour flight, it can burn 36,000 gallons.

  8. The Sukinda mines operate without environmental regulations. Waste from the mines contaminate the area’s water supply. Civilians are exposed to contamination, which causes gastrointestinal bleeding, tuberculosis and asthma. Infertility, birth defects and stillbirths are commonly reported.

  9. An estimated 134,000 people (half the current population of Norilsk) are affected by the harsh air pollution. The life expectancy of people in Norilsk are 10 years below average life expectancy in other Russian cities.

  10. Unsanitary conditions often lead to contamination of meat. E coli and Salmonella in beef and poultry are responsible for hundreds of hospitalizations and deaths per year.

  11. There are many harmful effects of coal mining. Surface mining destroys existing vegetation, soil and displaces wildlife and habitat. The extraction of coal also degrades air quality.

  12. Radioactive waste is created by nuclear power. This waste isn’t biodegradable and is extremely dangerous. Most plants store nuclear waste in steel-line concrete basins filled with water where it remains radioactive for thousands of years. EX: Japanese plant Fukushima Daiichi plant 2013
