Zhou Dynasty introduced the idea of • Mandate of Heaven • Mandate means – an authoritative command • Idea was that Heaven (god/universe) selected the ruler • When things went well it was proof • When things went badly, e.g. several years of severe drought or people rioting and rebelling, it was proof that it was time to change dynasties.
