Efficient Continuous Query Processing in LOFAR's Data Stream Management System

This study presents the implementation of SCSQ (Super Computer Stream Query) for processing the vast data streams from the LOFAR radio telescope, the first all-software radio telescope. By utilizing highly sensitive antennas connected to central processing facilities, we enable users to perform continuous queries on incoming radio signals. Our focus is on developing scalable query execution methods to handle increasing stream volumes and sources. We optimize both computation and communication times for effective usage of the BlueGene supercomputer architecture, ensuring efficient data analysis of early-universe phenomena.

  1. Online transient analysis in SCSQ using a sliding window continuous query Radio signals are received by tens of thousands of highly sensitive antennas, which are connected by fibers to the central processing facilities. A theoretical model of the universe a few million years after big bang. Stars begin to form. LOFAR data will enable empirical studies of these early-universe phenomena. SCSQ – Super Computer Stream Query processor • LOFAR is the world’s 1st all-software radio telescope • The telescope consists of antenna fields, producing 22 Tbps raw data streams • We implement SCSQ, a Data Stream Management System for processing of data streams from the LOFAR antennas. • SCSQ features: • Users search and analyze contents of data streams using continuous queries • Execution of such continuous queries in a massively parallel hardware environment • Research issues • Develop and investigate methods that ensure scalable query execution for increasing • stream volume • number of stream sources • computational cost of query operators • Optimize execution of continuous queries in the target environment taking into account both computation and communication time: • Optimal utilization of the BlueGene • Optimal utilization of the communi-cation subsystems inside and outside BlueGene SCSQ Erik ZeitlerTore RischUDBL In collaboration with LOFAR and LOIS Supported by LOFAR Central processing facilities feature a 12’000 CPU IBM BlueGene.
