PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE WMIS • collecting, analysing, archiving, and disseminating accurate data and information; • establishing an electronic (geo-spatial) data system that should provide intranet/internet access to extensive water resources databases; • conducting administrative functions via secure, electronic communication systems; • strengthening management of water resources, economic development, protection of the environment and human health on increased use of quality data and information produced and disseminated by the water management sector; • improving planning and management of water resources when based on a foundation of reliable and quality data and information; • Improving water resource spatial/temporal analysis, modelling and visualisation capabilities by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

WMIS DATABASE AND SOME BASIC APLICATIONS • ArcMap • creates and works with thematic maps with data divided into layers • supports entering and processing spatial data • enables spatial data visualization • offers a set of tools for advanced spatial analysis • WMIS Editors • simple and quick way of data viewing • enables entering and editing data for existing objects • allows multiple users to work simultaneously • validates data before saving

WMIS Basic Decision Support Systems • Supporting Tools for Inspection Work • identifies area affected with accidental pollution • Identifies potential pollution’s source • quick access to the WMIS data in the field, over the internet or hand-held devices. • Supporting Tools for Flood Defence Action Plan Reporting • enables follow-up of water level and discharge, status of flood defense • includes real time reporting to flood defense participants and general public • Other basic DSS: • Characterization of Water Bodies compliant to the WFD – River Typology • Reporting Tools – Water Quality Monitoring
