What I really enjoy: Pre-arrival Welcome Package (MSc by Research): • Information about Visa application/Edinburgh/travel; • University and department introduction; • Programme introduction; • Core course description/reading list; Induction Programme: • Orientation session with programme director, staff and fellow students; • Opportunity to communicate with previous students; • Social programme and peer support (Pub quiz night, learning set groups, etc); Programme Arrangement/curriculum: • Research-based curriculum with philosophy of educational research as a compulsory unit (MSc by Research) ; • An international/comparative perspective; • Fantastic supervision/mentoring experience; • Amazing inter-disciplinary learning opportunities; • PhD first-year and second-year progression report and feedback;

What I really enjoy: Opportunity to Teach • Tutoring experience – learning through teaching • Mentoring system University Student Support System: • International Office – VISA application; • One-off academic development support (academic writing, transferable skills/employability, etc); • English language; Cultural experience: • Use of inclusive language; • Diverse ideologies; • Autonomous/critical learning; • Amazing historical heritage and cultural events Edinburgh/Edinburgh University has to offer;

What I would like it to be: Programme Arrangement (by comparison with…) • Apprenticeship research training - requirement to work as a part of a research team; • Learning about how ‘real’ research projects are co-ordinated and operated; • Practicing data collection/analysis skills; • Learning about academic journal publication process; Comprehensive Induction Programme • (Informal) assessment and feedback (tutor and peer – MSc by Research) Engaging PhD students in School/Department Management • Keep us posted Visa Application Experience • Use of term – ‘low/high risk’?
