  10. Version 5 AVHRR Pathfinder Meeting user-defined needs to create the AVHRR SST Climate Data Record http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog

NODC AVHRR Pathfinder Goals To provide the longest, most accurate, and highest resolution consistently-reprocessed SST climate data record from the AVHRR sensor series To serve as fundamental input to GHRSST Reanalysis CDRs To be provided following full suite of IOOS DMAC protocols Version 5 AVHRR Pathfinder Pathfinder SSTs available at http://pathfinder.nodc.noaa.gov Recent Activities and Status • Version 5 Daily, 5-, 7-, 8-day, Monthly, Yearly SSTs for 1985-2007, plus corresponding climatologies • Since Jan 2004, over 25,000 users have acquired over 20 TB of Pathfinder SSTs • Data available via FTP, HTTP, OPeNDAP, and JPL POET system • Validation studies nearly complete • Used in new higher-resolution Reynolds optimal analysis Looking Ahead • 3 Year Scientific Data Stewardship grant awarded to UMiami/RSMAS and NODC to transfer reprocessing capability • Connections with GHRSST Reanalysis being developed: Pathfinder as a fundamental input to GHRSST reanalysis • Developing THREDDS Data Server Capability to aggregate and catalog Pathfinder SSTs, and serve via OPeNDAP and WCS http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog

CoRTAD Project • In addition to working nationally and internationally to create, archive, and serve satellite-based products, we also work closely with partners to use those products for societal benefit. • One example is a partnership with the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, called the Coral Reef Temperature Anomaly Database (CoRTAD) project 08 May 2007: Public Library of Science - Biology published "Thermal Stress and Coral Cover as Drivers of Coral Disease Outbreaks", by John F. Bruno, Elizabeth R. Selig, Kenneth S. Casey, et al. (PLoS Biology Vol. 5, No. 6, e124 doi:10.1371/journal.pbio.0050124). Lots of media attention for this work (Wall Street Journal, Reuters, etc.) Hot off the presses - Science manuscript recently submitted (Ben Halpern, UCSB lead author) using CoRTAD as an indicator of threat to ecosystems by climate change http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog

CoRTAD Project • Using the CoRTAD, we hope to understand long term thermal influences on corals, and use that understanding to better design and manage Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) • Questions being addressed include: • How are coral diseases related to temperature stresses? • What are the typical spatial and temporal extents of extreme thermal stress events? • What do these extents tell us about the proper size and spacing of MPAs if they are to be able to protect against thermal stresses • CoRTAD is a large database of SST and derived thermal stress metrics built using the AVHRR Pathfinder dataset • Global coverage, 4 km spatial resolution, and 21 years in length • Eventually will include GHRSST data as well http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog

IOOS Blueprint Project • We also work with various partners to integrate satellite data with other types of oceanographic and ecosystem data, and to serve those data to designated communities • One example of this type of work is the “IOOS Blueprint Project”, involving partners from five separate NOAA offices http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog

IOOS Blueprint ProjectGoals and Objectives • This project seeks to develop a standard process to: • Integrate near real-time in situ oceanographic data with historical and satellite data • ArchiveandServe those data through distributed data access protocols • Visualize those data though existing generalized and community-specific portals • By demonstrating IOOS DMAC principles within an integrated ocean data archive, access, and stewardship system, this project lays the foundation for integration of a wide range of data relevant to ecosystem and climate applications, science, and management http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog
