  3. Writing Metadata

  4. Tips for Writing Metadata It’s not so bad!! • First records are the hardest • Not all fields may need to be filled in • Tools are available • Training classes can be taken • Can often be produced automatically • Can (and should) be reviewed for updates

  5. Steps for writing quality metadata Writing Metadata Organize your information Organize your information Write your metadata file Write your metadata file Review your file Review your file Have someone else review Have someone else review Revise Revise Publish Publish

  6. Writing Metadata • Before you begin writing, get organized • Document your data as you go • Write so others can understand • Always review your document

  7. Some Helpful Items standard and/or workbook Metadata entry tool ISO editor sense of humour!!! chocolate coffee

  8. Keep your readers in mind • Write simply but completely • Document for a general audience • Be consistent in style and terminology

  9. Keep your readers in mind • Define all acronyms • Avoid using jargon • Clearly state data limitations

  10. Writing Metadata Write a complete title that includes… • What • Where • When • Who

  11. Greater Yellowstone Rivers from 1:126,700 Forest Visitor Maps (1961-1983) The title is critical in helping others find your data. Which is better?

  12. Be specific. Quantify when you can. • Vague:We checked our work and it looks complete. • Specific:We checked our work using 3 separate sets of check plots reviewed by 2 different people. We determined our work to be 95% complete based on these visual inspections.

  13. Select your key words wisely • Use unambiguous words • Use descriptive words • Fully qualify geographic locations

  14. Review your final product • Have someone else read it • If you’re the only reviewer, put it away and read it again later • Check for clarity and omissions

  16. GOAL: Write so that others will understand

  17. ISO Metadata Creation Methods

  18. Different approaches to creating ISO 19115 metadata: From existing metadata (such as FGDC) From templates From “scratch” Creating ISO Metadata

  19. Creating ISO Metadata via Transforms Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) is an XML-based language used for the transformation of XML documents into other XML documents. The original document is not changed; rather, a new document is created based on the content of an existing one. It does NOT guarantee valid XML records against a particular schema!!!! (simply displays the content in a new way.)

  20. Transforming Metadata This is a part of the mapping for FGDC CSDGM to ISO 19115. Comments are Best Practices or Questions

  21. Transforming Metadata Your input here is an xml version of a CSDGM record. XSLT Transformation csdgm2iso19115.xslt Your result is an xml instance of an ISO 19115 record.

  22. Other Transformations ISO to FGDC DIF to ISO FGDC THREDDS netCDF to ISO Various ISO and FGDC views Custom transforms (from databases to metadata standards)

  23. Transforming Metadata

  24. General Steps for XML Editors • Open Editor • Create New XML Document • Associate Schema with XML Document • Use Offline Schema OR • Online Schema • Select Root Element • MI_Metadata for 19115-2 • Edit File in Editing Window • Use Entry Helper Features • Use Auto-population Features Creating ISO Metadata From “Scratch”

  31. Upload Template File

  32. Edit Fields in Template

  33. Open XML Editor • Add Template Document • Associate Schema with XML Document • Use Offline Schema OR • Online Schema • Edit File in Editing Window • Navigate to “ *template* ”entries • Use Auto-population Features Creating ISO Metadata From Templates

  36. Edit Contact Information

  37. Edit Contact Information with Docucomp Component

  38. Open XML Editor • Add Transformed Document • Different XSLTs • Associate ISO Schema with XML Document • Use Offline Schema OR • Online Schema • Validate Record • Review Record for “transformed”entries • Edit as desired for ISO From Transformed Record
