  2. Gas Reactions • Avogadro’s Hypothesis – the volume of any gas is proportional to its volume. • This means that in any reaction, volumes of gas can be treated just like moles.

  3. Gas Reactions • N2 + 3H2 2NH3 • If you have 2 moles of N2, you can make 4 moles of NH3. • If you have 2 liters of N2, you can make 4 liters of NH3.

  4. Molar Volume • At standard temperature and pressure (STP) – 298 K, 1 atm, one mole of gas is equal to 22.4 L. • This is a very common conversion factor in gas stoichiometry. • At STP, 1 mol = 22.4 L

Sample Gas Stoichiometry Problem • The safety bags in automobiles are inflated by nitrogen gas generated by the rapid decomposition of sodium azide, NaN3: 2 NaN3(s) 2 Na(s) + 3 N2(g) • If an air bag has a volume of 36 L and is to be filled with nitrogen gas at a pressure of 1.15 atm at a temperature of 26.0 ºC, how many grams of NaN3 must be decomposed?
