  2. The End of the Middle Ages 1100-1300 • Stability • Prospering towns and cities. • Advancement of learning. • Population Growth

  3. The late Middle Ages • Rebellion, War, Church controversy and disease.

  4. Climate Change • Heavy rains destroy crops. • People become weak and more susceptible to disease.

  5. Asia 1346 The Plague Bacillus Feeds on Rat’s blood, killing it Fleas transport it From rat to human

  6. Bubonic Plague • Very Painful • Lymph nodes swell and turn black. • The victim would cough and spit blood. • The body would start to stink. • The swelling would burst and the person would die.

  7. Pneumonic Plague • Transported by coughing or sneezing. • The Victims lungs would fill with fluid and they would drown.

  8. Bubonic Plague • If the buboes were lanced right away, the victim had a chance. • Otherwise death was guaranteed within 3-5 days. • If the plague entered the blood stream directly, you could be dead within hours.

  9. The Spread • Plague rats boarded ships in Asia and headed for Europe. • It was more dangerous in crowded cities and among the poor. • Royalty and High Ranking church official were also killed. • Some estimates put the death toll at ½ the population.

  10. Impact • The plague drove people to crazy behaviour. • Most believed that the Plague was the Wrath God. • They lost faith in the church, who could not help. • They blamed Jews and thousands were massacred.

  11. The Aftermath • The Plague would shrink the population so much that it took Europe 150 years to start recovering. • The working class was cut down and peasants could charge more for their labour. • This meant a power shift.
