Dialectical Journals (DJs)What are they? • A dialectical journal is a method for personally responding to a piece of literature • It allows you to infer meaning for the text. • Dialectical journals in other words are a response to literature in journalformat. DJ FORMAT HAS THREE ASPECTS: • Interpretive claim • Evidence from the text • Analysis of Evidence

  6. INTERPRETATIVE CLAIM • This isyourresponse to an aspect of the reading. • It can focus on literary terms EX. theme, character, symbolism, foreshadowing, flashback… • You may discuss the meaning and significance of the selectionin relation to the novel as a whole. • Do not restate or explain/retell the quotation

  7. Evidence from the text This is the quotation that you have chosen to support and add evidence to the claim that you have made. EVIDENCE! EVIDENCE! EVIDENCE! Remember that a weakly supported claim will not be able to stand!!!

  8. ANALYSIS OF EVIDENCE • You should quote and paraphrase the literature. • Explain how the quote and claim support each other AGAIN, YOU ARE NOT RESTATING THE QUOTATION. This is where you explain why the quote led you to make the interpretive claim that you did.
