  2. Welcome to the unit

  3. I’m the world’s first cloned mammal Dolly. 1996

  4. Dolly and its creator The Scottish scientist Ian Wilmut

  5. the world’s first cloned mule Idaho Gem

  6. I was born on 4 May 2003, look! I’m growing stronger now.

  7. scientists created me with a cell taken from my mother Rainbow. My name is Cc, I was born in in the USADecember 2002.

  8. Our names areNoel, Engel, Star, Joy, andMary. Can you recognize each ofus?

  9. Two cloned calves on 5 July 1998 in Japan.

  10. My name is Andi, I’m the first genetically modified monkey. in the USA

  11. the cloned deer

  13. Keke and Shuangshuang in China.

  14. cloned rabbits born in Guangxi University.

  15. Discussion: 1.Do you think human beings should be cloned? Why or why not?

  16. 2. If you had a cloned brother or sister who looked exactly like you, how would you feel?

  17. Reading

  18. answer the following questions. • Does the article give an anti-or pro-cloning point of view, or both? • 2.What was the name of the first cloned mammal? • 3.Is Pauline Carter pro-or anti-cloning of human? Both Dolly Anti-cloning.

  19. 2. Who are the persons in the article related to cloning? Ian Wilmut Faye Wilson Severino Antinori Chinese scientists Pauline Carter Colin Jake

  20. Ian Wilmut, a Scottish scientist who created Dolly and was shocked when hearing some scientists were considering cloning human beings. He never intends to create copy of humans. Instead, he thinks the efforts of scientists should be directed towards creating new cells and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer.

  21. Faye Wilson,a woman of 41 years old who cannot have a baby. She is desperate to have a baby of his own, a child that is genetically related to her. Severino Antinori, an Italian doctor, is one of the leaders in the cloning research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.

  22. main idea of each paragraph An announcement about the first cloned human embryo caused much debate. Para 1 Para 2 Para 3 Para 4 Para 5 Para 6 The first cloned mammal was Dolly. Ian Wilmut is shocked that some scientists are considering cloning human beings. A woman wants to have a cloned baby. Cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, but some scientists still want to clone human beings. Chinese scientists continue to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.

  23. Read fast and decide T or F. 1. People all over the world are happy about the idea of cloning human beings. 2. Dolly, the first cloned mammal, is exactly the same as other sheep. 3. According to the article, the scientist who created Dolly does not agree with cloning human beings. F F T

  24. 4. Cloning can be used to cure diseases because it can produce new tissues and organs. 5. Colin Jake is against cloning humans, just like Pauline Carter. 6. Cloning human beings is illegal in many countries, so no scientists want to clone human beings. T F F

  25. Find the reasons why people are pro-or anti-cloning in the article and letters and write them down.

  26. create more diseases in the animal world cure diseases like cancer help those who are unable to have children cloning shows no respect for human life help those who want to clone their dead children human life would no longer be unique

  27. we should be having fewer babies in order to reduce Earth’s population, not cloning more

At the time I thought that the whole concept of cloning was________. cloning cell successfully immoral

  30. Why do some people think they have the _____ to go against nature? Who will be responsible for the possible negative____________? If we interfere with nature, we might create problems. It seems that I was correct — your article says that Dolly died at a much ________age than a non-cloned sheep. right consequences younger

  31. Also I can’t accept the idea of cloning _______. We have no right to experiment with human life. I believe that strict_____ should be put in place and governments should do more to stop human cloning. For example, the work of the ______doctor, Severino Antinori, must be stopped. humans laws Italian

  32. If I were the President of Italy, I would think about taking away his license. Yours faithfully, Wanglin

  33. Language points 1. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with nature in this way, they would be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.

  34. on (the) onehand, on the other hand On the one hand, rapid development of the economy will improve the livingconditions of the people. On the otherhandit will speed up environmental destruction.

  35. 2. I don’t want to adopt someone else’s child and I don’t want to use another woman’s egg —I want a child that is genetically related to me.

如: He adopted the orphan. Can a school adopt the policy prohibiting the use of mobile phones on campus?
