  1. Delta Modeling Section Bay Delta Office DSM2 Performance Measures Tara Smith CWEMF Annual Meeting February 26, 2007

  2. Presentation Overview • DSM2 Calibration Evaluation Process • Background on DSM2 Applications • Examples of Performance Measures Presented at Delta Modeling Workshop • Solicit Comments and Additional Ideas for Performance Measures • Start to Prioritized Performance Measures

  3. DSM2 Calibration Evaluation Process • First Step – Evaluate the performance of the current calibration of DSM2 • Determine current and potential applications of DSM2 • From those applications, determine and prioritize methods/measures to evaluate performance • Evaluate performance

  4. Applications of DSM2 • Application types • Historical • Forecasting (real-time and longer term) • Planning • Simulation types • Hydrodynamics (flow and water levels) • Conservative constituents (salinity) • Non-conservative constituents (Temperature, DO, TOC, etc) • Particle tracking

  5. Current and Potential Applications of DSM2 • Real-time applications • Operations • Emergency Response • Planning applications • Sea level rise • Island flooding • Frank’s Tract / 3-Mile Slough • Storage and conveyance alternatives • South Delta and other barriers/gates • Changes in operations

  6. Inputs for DSM2 The February Delta Modeling Workshop touched on several issues related to the availability of DSM2 input data, how it is used by the model and how it affects DSM2’s results. • Geometry • Flow • Stage • River and Ocean Boundary Water Quality • Agricultural Consumptive Use and Quality http://www.cwemf.org/Calendar/index.htm

  7. Performance Measures (From Delta Modeling Workshop) • Amplitude and Phase Differences (Nader) • Tidally Averaged Data (Nader) • Harmonic Analysis (L. Smith) • Weighting Schemes Between Field Data and Model Output (Guerin) • Other Statistical Measures

  8. Performance Measures (From Delta Modeling Workshop) • Match Tidal Prism (Enright) • Surface and Bottom Salinity • Impact of Location of Boundary Conditions on results (Enright, Shum, Nader) • Open Water Areas – Franks Tract (Shum) • Gate Operation (Shum) • Wind Effects (P. Smith) • Ocean Boundary Modeling (P. Smith)
