    2. Roman Republic Romans were once ruled by a tyrannical foreign king. After independence, Roman leaders vowed never to be ruled again by a king. Romans founded a type of representative gov’t called a republic

    3. Duty, Discipline, Sacrifice Duty was ingrained in Romans from birth no complaining hard work obedience to parents & authority In wartime, Roman soldiers provided their own weapons & food. Units of soldiers who ran away in battle were rounded up and “decimated” (every 10th man was executed by the others).

    4. Overtime Roman Values Weakened Early Republic Representative gov’t Discipline Strong work ethic Duty Sacrifice Citizen soldiers Late Republic / Empire Apathy / Laziness Reliance on slaves Unemployed mobs wanted to be “entertained” Corruption Mercenary soldiers Overconfidence

    8. Some Basic Info. Everyone Should Know About Rome… Latin was the official language of Roman civilization. The Roman Catholic Church was founded in Rome once Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 AD.

    10. The Eastern Roman Empire which did not collapse was renamed what? The Byzantine Empire The Greek speaking and Greek Orthodox Byzantine Empire lasted about another 1,000 years. It did not have a “dark” or Middle Ages like Western Europe had, so learning and progress continued there. The Byzantine Empire was conquered in 1453 by the Muslim Ottoman Turks.
