Separable Verbs. There is a group of verbs in German called separable verbs = trennbare Verben. waschen. They consist of a prefix and the main verb. ab. This is how they appear in the infinitive: As one word!. ab waschen.

  2. There is a group of verbs in German called separable verbs = trennbare Verben

  3. waschen They consist of aprefix and the main verb ab

  4. This is how they appear in the infinitive: As one word! abwaschen

  5. When you use a separable verb in the present tense you need to chop it up! abwaschen  Ich wascheab.

  6. The prefix is always at the end of the clause! Ich wasche heute den ganzen Tag alle Gabeln, Löffel, Messer, Gläser, Teller und Schälchen zusammen mit meiner Großmutter und meinen Geschwistern ab.

  7. In the perfect tense… … the past participle is made up by sticking the prefix in front of the past participle of the actual verb. ab + gewaschen = abgewaschen

  8. Meine Mutter hat abgewaschen

  9. Used with a modal verb we have to use the infinitive of the separable verb: Ich muss immer abwaschen!

  10. Put these separable verbs into a present tense form! • abwaschen: Ich _______ ____. • aufräumen: Du _________ ____. • anziehen: Er _______ sich ____. • fernsehen: Wir _______ ____. • einkaufen: Ihr ________ ____. • aufstehen: Sie _______ ____.

  11. Perfect Tense:Make up a sentence each for these three verbs: einkaufen: Er _______ ___________________ aufräumen: Wir________ __________________ abwaschen: Du ________ ___________________

  12. Write these sentences again using the modal verb in brackets! • Ich stehe um acht Uhr auf. (müssen) • Du wäschst heute ab. (müssen) • Er räumt immer sein Zimmer auf. (müssen) • Wie ziehen uns um halb acht an. (müssen) • Er sieht immer fern. (dürfen) • Ihr kauft ein. (dürfen)
