Separable and inseparableprefix verbs (Präteritum) • In the Präteritum, just like the Präsens, some prefixes are always attached to the verb, and others can be separated from it. When using a separable prefix verb in the Präteritum, move the prefix to the end of the sentence or clause.

The Präteritumof a verb with a prefix is the same as the Präteritum of its base verb, but with the prefix added to the front of the conjugated verb, if it is inseparable, or to the end of the clause, if it is separable.
