  2. What is Family & Consumer Science? • Family: A group of people. • Consumer: Someone who buys things. • Science: The study of… All put together…. Family and consumer science is the study of how to work well in group s and make good decisions with your money.

  3. What You’ll do in this class • Learn to…. • Work well in groups • Lead a group • Make healthy food choices • Cook healthy foods • Plan for your future • Manage your Money • Sew • Learn how to tell if clothes are well made • HAVE FUN!!!

  4. Three classroom rules 1. Be on time If you’re late you get three warnings then detention to make up the missed class time…. 2. Be Prepared 3. Be Respectful of…. The teacher Your peers The equipment MARBLE JAR!!!! *Everyday rules and procedures are followed your class will earn marbles in your jar. When the jar is filled you get a popcorn party!!!!

  5. What do You need for class? • 1 marble notebook • 1 folder • 10 sheets of loose leaf • Pen/Pencil • Glue stick • All items stay in class so you don’t have to remember to take them back and forth.

  6. How are You graded? • Projects: • 3-4 per marking period. • Worth 50% of your grade. • Quizzes: • 6-10 mini quizzes after each section plus two safety quizzes. • Worth 25% of your grade. • Portfolio: • Mini Projects 5-10 per marking period. • Worth 20% of your grade • Participation • Rubric online and homework assignments • Worth 5% of your grade.

  7. What do You do when You come into class • Get your folder and notebook • Begin the do now activity on the board. • If you finish early read silently until class begins…

  8. When are we going to cook?!?!?!?!? • Soon! But cooking is the second unit and it takes about a month to get through each unit…but there are lots of fun projects along the way!

  9. My teacher – Mrs. Richards • Grew up in Livingston and went to Collins School and Livingston High School

  10. Mrs. Richards • Went to Penn State!!! And managed restaurants before becoming a teacher.

  11. Mrs. Richards • Has a BIG golden retriever who she loves very very much! His name is Buddy, but we call him “the Budster”…

  12. Mrs. richards • Just adopted a cat named Everest….he is one bossy kitty!

  13. Mrs. Richards • Got married this summer • Traveled to Italy!

  14. What Mrs. Richards will miss the most about summer…. • Sleeping late and the heat! I hate the cold…boo!

  15. Mrs. Richards • Loves to • hike with the Budster • Bake • Hang out with her husband, friends, and pets • Play with her iphone • Read • Go to Yankee games with her brothers. • Shop with her mom
