  1. Your home’s drinking water is one of your most important resources. The quality of that water is also very commonly overlooked, leading to many water quality issues going completely undiagnosed. That is what makes residential water treatment systems so important. There are a lot of different types of waterborne contaminants and using one of these filtration systems can help to protect everyone in your home. How is Water Contaminated? There are a lot of different ways that your home’s drinking water can become contaminated. If you have well water then you will have to deal with a lot more potential sources of contamination. Even homes with water lines may suffer poor water quality as a result of old pipes, leaking mains, or poor water filtration at treatment plants.

  2. Chemical Contaminants One of the most common sources of waterborne contamination are chemical in nature. A lot of these chemicals are actually used as water conditioners in water treatment plants and are designed to improve water quality. The main side effect of this type of contamination is a chlorine taste and odor that resembles pool water. Many carbon based filtration systems are well suited to neutralize these chemicals. In addition to water treatment chemicals, you also have to worry about heavy metals like lead. The main source of heavy metal contamination is aging infrastructure. Old lead pipes can leach dangerous amounts of lead into your water supply.

  3. The biggest issue with this source of contamination is the fact that these metals will not affect the overall taste, smell, or appearance of your water even at dangerous levels. Water tests can give you a snapshot of your water quality at any given moment, but quality can change over time. Biological Contaminants Another dangerous water borne harmful contaminant is biological cysts. These disease causing parasites are encased in a protective shell that makes them hard to damage. Once inside the body, the cyst can “hatch” and the parasites can induce disease.

  4. Cysts like this can cause giardia and cryptosporidium. Water can also be contaminated by decaying organic matter in your pipes. This can be caused by various microbes and tends to result in water that has a rotten taste or smell. Choosing a Residential Water Treatment System When it comes to finding the correct house water filter system, there are a wide range of options on the market. One of the most common types of home filters are filtered water pitchers.
