  3. Surgeons Surgeons are crucial in the health science industry for many reasons. They perform operations which involve cutting of a body, to remove or repair organs inside the body.

  4. General Surgery This type of surgery focuses on organs located in the abdominal area. This includes: • Intestines • Esophagus • Stomach • Colon • Gallbladder

  5. Cardiac Surgery This type of surgery focuses on the heart or around the vessels of the heart. This type of surgery is useful to treat: • Valvular heart disease • Ischemic heart disease • Congenital heart disease

  6. Dental Surgery Surgery that uses medical procedures to fix dental problems. Types of dental surgery include: • Endodontic surgery • Prosthodontics surgery • Orthodontic treatment

  7. Dermatologic Surgery This type of surgery deals with skin and diseases that deal with the skin. Dermatologic surgery also deals with diseases or cancer in: • Scalp • Hair • Nails

  8. Hand Surgery Hand surgery deals with surgical and non-surgical treatment of problems that occur with the hand or arm area. Surgery performs operations such as: • Congenital defects • Transfer/repairs of tendons • Fracture repairs

  9. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery This type of surgery focuses on the cranial part of the human body. Operations are performed on: • Mouth • Jaws • Neck • Skull

  10. Obstetrics and Gynaecology This type of surgery deals with female reproductive organs. Pregnancy is usually tied in with this field, but it is also for non-pregnant women.

  11. Orthopedic Surgery Surgery that involves the musculoskeletal system. This is used to treat: • Musculoskeletal trauma • Sports injuries • Degenerative diseases • Infections/tumors

  12. Pediatric surgery Surgery that focuses on treating fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Other special surgeries include: • Pediatric cardiothoracic surgery • Pediatric transplant surgery • Pediatric neurosurgery • Pediatric urological surgery

  13. Plastic Surgery Plastic surgery involves the correction or restoration of function of form. Plastic surgery is included in many areas including: • Craniofacial surgery • Hand surgery • Burn surgery • Microsurgery • Reconstructive surgery

  14. Thoracic Surgery Surgery that is focused around the chest area but not including the heart. Usually treats: • Lungs • Chest wall • Esophagus • Diaphragm

  15. Veterinary Surgery This type of surgery is focused on animals. A General veteran surgery operation is castration. There are many complex operations that are needed in veterinary surgery and many areas to train in.
