Southern Life • Diverse Population • Germans in Maryland & Virginia • Scots and Scot-Irish in Western North Carolina • Prosperous Life • Life controlled by wealthy and big planters. • Enjoyed Luxury • Women • Second-class citizens • Mostly doing household works • Indentured Servants • Bad and harsh life

Slavery in the South • 200,000 African Slaves by 1750 • Slave Trade was part of triangular trade • Middle Passage was a hard experience for most African slaves. • Slave Work • 80-90% worked in the field • 10-20% worked as domestic servants and learned to become artisans • Full-time work began at age 12 till death.

  5. Africans Coping with Life • Maintaining Culture and Family • Wove Baskets and molded Pottery • Collectively raised Children • African dancing traditions • Slaves Also resisted their masters & sometimes openly revolted • Stono Rebellion in 1739
