How to Characterize? Characterization is the method used by a writer to develop a character.
Personality or Psychological Traits Aspects of a character’s personality that make him /her unique A personality can change or evolve with time.
Qualities Character traits that show the positive attributes of his/her personality. Examples • Sincerity, • Generosity, • Patience, • Creativity, • Love, • Tolerance, • Responsibility, • Loyalty, …
Weaknesses Weaknesses in a character, like vices, imperfections or flaws, make him or her appear more human causing the audience to identify with her/him. Examples: • Hypocrisy, • Selfish • Impatient, • Unoriginal, • Hateful, • Prejudice, • Unreliability, • Unfaithfulness (not loyal)
Lisa Simpson Physical traits: • She is a young girl. • She has yellow hair and skin • She wears an orange dress Character traits: • Qualitiy: She loves animals. • Weakness: She hates to lose.
Stewie Griffin Physical traits: • He is a baby, with an oval head • He wears blue shoes. • He is holding a gun. Character traits: • Qualitiy: He is funny. • Weakness: He is evil.
Direct VS Indirect Characterization Direct or explicit characterisation • The author literally tells the audience what a character is like. This may be done via the narrator, another character or by the character him- or herself. Indirect or implicit characterisation • The audience must deduce for themselves what the character is like through the character’s thoughts, actions, speech (choice of words, way of talking), looks and interaction with other characters, including other characters’ reactions to that particular person.
Examples: Direct characterization: ‘‘ I reallylike Ben. He isalwaysso good to me. He isgenerous and considerate.’’ Indirect characterization: ‘‘ I saw Ben at the cafeteria. Immediately, I ran and satnext to him. As usual, hesmiled and gave me hischocolate bar. He knows how much I love chocloatesohealwayssaves me a bigpiece’’
