  2. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 Into a prominent NY Family Sickly, Shy, forbidden to participate in any sports Life and Childhood As a teenager, he was determined to become a new person. He took up boxing, tennis, rowing.

  3. “Teedie” Roosevelt • He LOVED the outdoors. • Tragedy at 26 • Wife and Mother die unexpectedly • TR retreats to his Ranch in S. Dakota to work with cowboys, hunt bear and mountain lions • Westerners respect him for his toughness

  4. Teddy and Politics “A man who is good enough to shed his blood for the country is good enough to be given a square deal afterwards.”

  5. Became involved in politics at 28 • Becomes Governor of NYC in 1898 • Nominated as VP under McKinley • Becomes the youngest President in1901 after McKinley’s assassination. • Sees the White House as a bullypit • ~ A powerful platform to publicize important issues and seek support for his policies

Coal Strike 1904 Early in Presidency: • 150,000 PA coal miners go on strike just before WINTER • Roosevelt intervenes and pronounces a “Square Deal” for both sides. “EACH PERSON IS GIVEN A SQUARE DEAL, BECAUSE HE IS ENTITLED TO NO MORE AND SHOULD RECEIVE NO LESS” • Becomes Framework for entire Presidency
