  4. Health • People believed world made of 4 elements • Earth, Air, Fire, Water • “Doctors” believed people made of 4 “humors” (body fluids) which affected health • Blood, Phlegm, Yellow bile, Black bile • Unbalanced humors caused illness • Cure was bloodletting

  5. Average age of death: 45 for men, 35 for women • No sanitation • No electricity • Lack of medical knowledge • No dentists

  6. High infant mortality rate • Home births • No doctors, sanitation • Complications caused deaths of mother & child • No vaccinations • Families had many children; few survived

  7. Typical woman faced: • Multiple births beginning at age 13-15 • Most children dying • Lady Capulet “old” by 25! • Dying in childbirth common ‘til 1900’s!

  8. The Black Plague • Peaked in mid-1300s • 1/3 to ½ of Europe’s population died • Death rates reached 2/3 in major cities

  9. Symptoms • Fever • Victim seems giddy/crazy • Swollen glands • Bleeding under the skin • Rash appears over glands • DEATH!

  10. Black Plague Treatments • Hot air • Washing hands and feet • Prayer • Carrying flowers

  11. Living Conditions • 98% of population uneducated, poor • Houses: • Wooden, thatched roofs • Little furniture • No electricity

  12. Bathing • Toilets: chamber pots • Community wells • Soap not common, perfume more common • Transportation: walking or horses • Communication: letters by messenger

  13. Family • Puberty = adult • Arranged marriage • Children “owned” by parents

  14. Entertainment • Church • Public hangings • Bear baiting • Plays

  15. Plays • Language = poetry • Imagination required • Costumes • Escape • Naïve audience • Few props • All-male cast • Held outside; most people stood • 2 hours, no intermission • Audience participation

  16. Cause-and-Effect • Cause: Life in Elizabethan England=rough! • Effect: Popularity of theater • Why was theater so popular in Elizabethan England???
