  2. Class Rules: • 1. Enter quietly, be seated and go to work. • 2. Listen the first time. • 3. Come to class with materials. • 4. Respect others and their property. • 5. Talk or leave seat only with permission. • 6. Follow school rules and classroom directions.

  3. CONSEQUNCES: • 1. Warning • 2. Work in isolation and additional assignment. • 3. Parent, student, and teacher conference. • 4. Office referral.

  4. EXPECTATIONS: • 1. Students are to submit all homework and class work on time. No late work will be accepted; if late work is permitted, student grade on that assignment will be lowered a letter grade for each day the assignment is late. • 2. All handouts, notes, graded assignments, etc, should be kept in an organized portfolio.

  5. EXPECTATIONS: • 3. Students will get all make up work before or after school or during my planning period. A make up request sheet will be posted in the room and is to be completed in order to get missed work. • 4. Each class will begin on time. Students are expected to be ready to begin class at the appointed time.

  6. EXPECTATIONS: • 5. Students are to bring materials (only those that pertain to this class), which includes textbooks, to class at all times.

When you enter the class, there will be a quote on the board. You are to spend 5-7 minutes writing in your journal about the quote. There are no right or wrong answer, just

  11. First Things First…… • For all assignments, you are to make sure that you write legibly, use black or blue ink, and apply properly all rules of the English language. In other words, you should make sure that your assignments are grammatically correct. This includes spelling words correctly.

  12. First Things First…… • You will be required to recite poems and, at times, interpret them. • Also, you should make sure that you do not write on the back of your paper(s) or outside the margins.

  21. Literary Terms • 1. Symbol- something that stands for something else. • 2. Exposition- Introduction/ background information. • 3. Setting- where and when the story takes place. • 4. Theme- the central point or message “life lesson”. • 5. Plot- the series of actions. • 6. Rising action- adds to complications of conflict • 7. Conflict- problem to be solved. • 8. Climax- most intense part, turning point. • 9. Falling action- follows climax, reveals resolution. • 10. Resolution- the final outcome, solving of problem.

  22. Literary Terms • 11. Foreshadowing- hints of events to come. • 12. Flashback- an earlier events is inserted. • 13. Mood- the feeling or atmosphere of a piece of writing. • 14. Point of view- voice through which the story is told. • 15. First person- character uses own voice, uses I. • 16. Third person limited- narrator reveals thoughts of one person, uses he or she. • 17. Third person omniscient- narrator not a character, knows everything about the characters. • 18. Protagonist- main character • 19. Antagonist- force that opposes the central character. • 20. Foil- a character who contrast with another.

Dialect- language spoken by a group, often within a region. 25. Irony- contrast between appearance and reality. 26. Situational Irony- outcome is opposite of what is expected. 27. Verbal Irony- says one thing and means another. 28. Dramatic Irony- reader knows something the characters do not.

Allusion- a reference in a work of literature to history, art or literature. • 32. Analogy- a comparison to show similarities between two things that are dissimilar. • 33. Figurative language- used for descriptive effect. • 34. Literal Language- simple, straight-forward, opposite of figurative language. • 35. Imagery- language that appeals to the senses. • 36. Simile – comparison using like or as. • 37. Metaphor- comparison not using like or as.
