  2. Share the Road! • Watch out for fellow drivers • Give them the same amount of road you use. • Keep your distance • Take an extra look for them • Pay attention to their hand signals or signal lights • Consider Road Splitting

State By State Laws Facts Texas • Get to know the laws, and regulations within your state. • Not every state has the same laws! • Citations vary from state to state depending on violation • Know laws to avoid citations • Must be certified by classes • Must have classification on license • Must wear helmet if 21 and under • Headlights must be on during the day and night (americanmotorcyclist.com).

  4. Helpful Helmets • Hard exterior and padded interior • Overall protection of the head in case of collision • Helmets not required in all states, but they are highly recommended • Riders who wear helmets are less likely to face serious injury or trauma (nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov).

Body Protection • Wearing protective gear is advised when riding, to keep you body safe. • Different types of protection is available: -Padded Jacket -Gloves -Steel tow boots -Long pants (padded) • Wear something highlighted, bright, or reflective to catch the attention of drivers (allstate.com).

  7. Certification Classes • Classes teach safety, laws, and how to respond to emergencies • hands on experience of how to operate motorcycle • Law has changed for Texas! Riders must take certification classes, but not all states require classes • Every age must now take classes • Class M is what defines a certified motorcyclists on their license (news.discovery.com)

  8. Public Take Action • Do not ignore a motorcyclists in need • Not every accident is serious, FIRST ask if they need help (motorcyclistonline.com) • If you see accident is serious, ACT FAST! • Go to scene and stabilize rider • Call 911 immediately • Their safety relies on you

  9. Inform the youth • Motorcyclists are everywhere! • Youth are influenced by the media, entertainment and even sports • Talk to your teen about riding a motorcycle • 16-17 year olds must complete Basic Rider Course in other states (dmv.state.pa.us.pdf). • Law recently new to Texas

Change El Paso! • Multiple accidents are constantly happening within the city • 10 motorcycle related deaths just in 2012 • 5 deaths so far in 2013 (Martinez,elpasotimes). • Most accidents result in motorcyclists dying • Rates are still rising • City must raise awareness! • May is national Motorcycle awareness month
