  3. Focus Question: Now you know we have a limited amount of water, and it is cleaned and reused in the water cycle. Can WE create water cycle models that will clean water that can be reused here in the science lab?

  4. Materials: 1 ziploc bag 1 plastic cup water mixed with your choice of solvent, debris or pollutant: salt, soil, food color, vinegar, oil

  5. Method: measure and record the amount of water you place inside your cup mix a pre-measured amount of your chosen solvent/pollutant/debris if you chose a solvent such as sugar, salt, or food color, mix until all the solvent is dissolved into the water mark the level of the water on the cup with a sharpie marker place the cup into the ziploc bag seal the bag tightly and place in a warm, sunny spot, or under a lamp Be sure to “tent” the bag so the side flow downward. (see illustrations on the next slide.)

  7. Hypothesis: Now: For the solvent/pollutant/debris YOUR group chose, do you think your water cycle model will work to clean and recycle your water? Why or why not? How will it work? Why WON’T it work?

  8. Data Collection: In your science notebook, glue in the following table:

  9. Results: In your science notebook, write a statement describing the look of the water IN the cup. Write a statement describing the look of the water outside of the cup. Explain HOW the water outside the cup got to be there.

  10. Conclusion: In your science notebook, write your final, concluding statement that addresses your hypothesis: Did your water cycle model clean your water sample? Was the water in the bag clean? How does this model show how people can provide fresh water for themselves?
