Tsunami Tsunami- A long high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance. • Tsunamis have been relatively rare in the Indian Ocean, and are most common in the Pacific Ocean. • Most tsunamis occur when there are underwater events such as an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. • They can occur in any large body of water, even in large lakes. An example is the mega-wave that formed when the volcano erupted at Mount St. Helens in the US in 1980. The eruption caused a massive landslide into Spirit Lake and that caused the mega-wave.

Hurricane Hurricane- storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. • A list of hurricane names • Alberto, Beryl, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony • Hurricane Katrina formed in the Bahamas August 23rd, 2005 • When hurricanes come onto land they destroy anything in it’s path. It destroys these things by using it’s heavy rains, and heavy winds.

Tornado • Tornado- A rotating column of air ranging in width from a few yards to more than a mile and whirling at destructively high speeds • Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. • They may appear nearly transparent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel. • Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., but can occur at any time.

Flood • Flood- an overflowing of a large amount of water • Natural floods are the floods that are caused naturally by the overflow of the huge volume of water from rivers, lakes, and oceans. • A mere 2 feet of water can float a large vehicle even a bus. • New land development can increase flood risk, especially if the construction changes natural runoff paths.

  6. Drought • Drought- a shortage of water over a long period of time. • One of the interesting features of drought is that it can occur in any climate. • In developing countries, drought may affect people’s access to food and water. • As the climate heats up, droughts are expected to become more frequent and severe in some locations.
