Data Overview • Commission for Higher Education collects record-level data from Indiana public higher education institutions • Data elements include: • -Enrollment: status, major, credits attempted/earned, remedial credits attempted/earned, cumulative credits, cumulative GPA) • -Degree Conferral: level, major, date • -Student demographics: race, gender, county of origin • CHE obtains additional data from National Student Clearinghouse • CHE longitudinal data system links students across Indiana public colleges, augments with NSC data to link students with Indiana private & out of state colleges • Indiana’s Statewide Longitudinal Data System (IWIS) links high school graduates & high school data with CHE data and workforce data • All of these systems/data points make these models possible

The Tools Used • Various data sets: • ICHE yearly Indiana public college data submissions (CHEDSS) • National Student Clearinghouse • Indiana Department of Education (graduates, diploma type, ACT, SAT, AP scores, other demographic characteristics) • Department of Workforce Development (unemployment insurance, new hire data) • Various data systems: • CHE longitudinal data system • Department of education longitudinal data system • DWD longitudinal data system • IWIS (Indiana’s linked K-20W longitudinal data system)

Definitions -Freshmen: first time, full time entry students -Transfers: first time transfer students (students entering an institution for the first time in a given year, but who have been previously enrolled in college) -Graduates: students who completed the same degree than they originally sought (e.g., enrolled seeking Bachelor’s, earned Bachelor’s) -Completers: students who completed a lower degree than they originally sought (e.g., enrolled seeking Bachelor’s, earned Associate’s), OR students who complete an “unknown” degree (unspecified degree level at private or out-of-state school) -Still enrolled: students who still had a degree-seeking enrollment record 6 years (150%) post-entry -”IPEDS Rate”: graduation rate as defined by IPEDS (start and finish at same degree level, same institution) -All IN Public Grads Rate: graduation rate when including all students who graduate from an Indiana public (in other words, do not need to start and finish at same institution; can finish at any Indiana public) -Total Completion Rate: completion rate when including all students who graduate or complete anywhere
