  4. A Word on Requirements • So much more than good grades… • Letters of recommendation/social networking • Experience: Research, grad classes, working • A definitive drive or passion – show you can do it • PhD program? Go get your Masters

  5. Environment • PhD vs. Masters • Year variance • Research vs. teaching vs. activist institutions • Departmental focus • Other campus issues • Graduate student status

  6. Personal Life • Like being a Freshman… except without all of the other Freshmen? • Hi my name is awkward and I read too much • Living it up (or down?) • What’s my age again? • Significant others, kids and distance • Other disciplines? • Geographical and international • Time and time not again

  7. Class Life • Self-led studies and research… sorta • Reading! Whole books this time. Hardcore. • Professor/student relationship & class types • Fewer hours, but teaching and intensity • Essential classes • Presenting your Ego • The new grading scale:

  9. Professional Life • This is a job? • Publishing • Conferences, journals, credentials, defense • Researching • RA-ships, not always your own, with who? • Assistantships • Teaching w/o training? Obligation? Role-models? • Service • Job talks, paper presentations, advising clubs
