  1. Cell Organelles Chapter 7 in Zebra Book

  2. Prokaryotic Cells • Does NOT have a nucleus • Mainly unicellular organisms • Bacteria are prokaryotes • PRO= NO

  3. Eukaryotic Cells • DOES have a true nucleus • All other organisms (animals, plants, etc) • EU=TRUE • EU=NU

  4. Visualizing Cells • Page 192 in Zebra Book • Diagrams of cells • What all organelles look like

  5. Nucleus • Largest organelle • Controls activities of the cell • Houses the DNA • “brain”

  6. Plasma Membrane • Thin layer surrounding the cell • “Cell Membrane” • Page 188

  7. Cytoplasm • Material inside the plasma membrane but outside the nucleus • Jelly-Like (looks like Jell-O) • All chemical processes in the cell take place in the cytoplasm • p. 191

  8. Cytoskeleton • Cell support • anchors for organelles • Made of long, thin protein fibers • p. 191

  9. Ribosomes • Made of RNA and proteins • Makes proteins • “protein factories” • p. 193

  10. Endoplasmic Reticulum • System of canals to pass materials • Produces proteins or lipids (fats) • Also called ER • 2 types – Smooth and Rough • Rough has ribosomes on the outside, smooth does not • p. 194

  11. Golgi Apparatus • Helps to package materials made in the cell • Also called Golgi Body • p.195

  12. Vacuoles • Storage for food, water, enzymes, or waste products • Usually not found in animal cells • p. 195

  13. Lysosome • Contains digestive enzymes • Could rupture and kill the cell • “suicide sac” • p. 196

  14. Mitochondria • Cellular respiration • Where energy is made • “Powerhouse of the Cell” • p. 197

  15. Chloroplast • Found only in plant cells • Area for photosynthesis • “carbohydrate factory” • p. 197

  16. Nucleolus • Circular body found inside the nucleus • Produces ribosomes • p. 193

  17. Cell Wall • Found in plant and bacteria cells • Supports and protects a plant cell • Found around the plasma membrane • Provides support
