  5. Literal Sense • Joseph’s brothers come to visit him in Egypt so they can buy grain. “Go down there and buy some for us, that we may stay alive rather than die of hunger.” Genesis 42:2 • Joseph throws them into prison because he says they are spies. “So send one of your number to get your brother, while the rest of you stay here under arrest.” Genesis 42:16 • Joseph gets his brothers out of prison and they return home to Canaan. “If you have been honest, only one of your brothers need be confined in this prison, while the rest of you may go and take home provisions for your starving families.” Genesis 42:20

  6. Moral Sense L L L L L • This story tells us how we should act in our lives and how we should treat our family. • We need to treat our families with justice, love, mercy, and respect. • This story also tells us that we need to think through our decisions before we make them. L L L L

  7. Allegorical Sense • This story reminds us of Jesus because Joseph turns against his brothers like Judas did and turns against his “brother” Jesus. Joseph’s brothers are like the apostles and Jesus because they are betrayed by the outlier.

  8. Anagogical Sense • This story has to do with our faith journey to heaven because, it shows us how we must follow and trust in God at all times, and that God will always be there for us.
