  1. 1) What causes the Moon’s Phases?2) What are Eclipses? Chapter 6 Lesson 4 Phases and Eclipses

  2. The Moon, as Shakespeare suggests in Romeo and Juliet, is fickle. Its complex orbit moves it swiftly across a wide tract of the night and day skies, changing its appearance continually in both bold and subtle ways. O swear not by the moon, th'in constant moon That monthly changes in her circled orb, Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.

  3. Phases of the Moon • Only 1 side of the moon faces Earth • The far side always faces away from Earth • Moon has a rotation and revolution, just like Earth • 1 day on the moon = 1 month on the Earth

  4. The Moon’s Motion Where would the moon's face appear in each view in this diagram that shows the moon's rotation and revolution?

  5. Solar Eclipse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmfkskZfT_E

  6. SolarEclipse • Happens during the day • Moon blocks sunlight • DON’T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN! • The next solar eclipse that you will be able to see from North America will be on October 23,2014 A total solar eclipse only happens in the same city once every 400 years! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOvWioz4PoQ

  7. Phases and Eclipses Solar Eclipse The diagram shows the moon’s penumbra and umbra during an eclipse.

  8. Lunar Eclipse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuhNZejHeBg

  9. How can a little moon hide a gigantic sun??? • The Sun is approximately 93 million miles from Earth. A car going 60 miles an hour would take about 177 years to reach the Sun from Earth. • The Moon is much closer to the Earth. The distance is less than 240,000 miles. A car going 60 miles an hour would take about 5.5 months to reach the Moon from Earth.

  10. Lunar Eclipse • Happens at Night • Must be a full moon • When the Earth blocks sunlight • Causes a shadow on the moon. • The next Total Lunar Eclipse will take place on April 15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dk--lPAi04

  11. Phases and Eclipses Lunar Eclipse As the moon moves through Earth’s shadow, total and partial eclipses occur. P T P

  12. Phases and Eclipses Seasons and Shadows Identify what season it is in the Northern Hemisphere, what the phase of the moon is, and what kind of eclipse, if any, could occur.
