  2. Cities • Shanghai- Shanghai is the largest and most populous city in China. It’s population is just under 15,000,000 people. • Beijing- Beijing is the capital and the second most populous city in China. It is known as “one of the world’s greatest cities. • Hong Kong- Hong Kong is one of the

  3. Cities Continued • most densely populated areas in the world. In Hong Kong, there are many trains and double decker buses. These are the main ways of transportation in Hong Kong.

  4. Sports • The most popular sports that are played in China are football, basketball, and table tennis or ping pong. China is really big on ping pong and not too much with football. One very famous Chinese basketball player is Yao Ming.

  5. Climate • There are many different types of climates in China. • In the northern part of China, where Beijing is located, the summer daytime temperatures are 86°F or above. In the winter, temperatures are as if China were in the Arctic Zone. • In the central part of China, where Shanghai is located, the summer temperatures are about 90°F or above.

  6. Climate Continued • In the winter, the central parts of China get down to 0°F. • In the southern part of China, where Guangzhou is located, the climate is subtropical and temperatures can get well over 100°F. In the winter, the temperatures always stay at a mild temperature.

  7. Famous Landmarks • The Forbidden City- The Forbidden City took fourteen years to build and the construction started in 1402. It is located in the center of Beijing. • The Terracotta Army- The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 near Xi’an. There are more than 7,000 life-size clay terracotta figures of warriors, horses, and chariots.

  8. Famous Landmarks Continued • Beijing’s Olympic Marvels- this Olympic stadium was built for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The stadium seats 80,000 people and covers 250,000 square meters.

  9. The Great Wall of China • The Great Wall of China is the longest wall in the world stretching for 6,350 km. It starts in the city of Shanhaiguan and ends in Jaiyuguan. It was built in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) to defend Emperor Qin’s realm against nomadic tribes.
