  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus’ Farewell Discourse July 8, 2012 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. Introduction • Jesus has just shared the Passover meal with His disciples in the Upper Room • He has washed their feet • He has acknowledged Judas as the traitor • The end of Jesus’ earthly ministry is very near • There are important things to discuss www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. Jesus Glorified • John 13:31-32 • 31Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.” • What is about to happen will happen very soon and will glorify God www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Where I Go ... • John 13:33-35 • 33“Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’” • Jesus tells them he’ll be leaving them soon and that it will be a physical separation www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. Love One Another • John 13:31-35 • 34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • Is this a new commandment? • It certainly builds on an earlier one • It will be the distinguishing trait of those who follow Him www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial • John 13:36-38 • 36Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.” 37Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. Ah, Peter • I believe there’s a bit of Peter in all of us • Speaking before understanding the issue • What is meant by “you will follow later”? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. My Father’s House • John 14:1-4 • 1“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way where I am going.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. But Where? • John 14:5-7 • 5Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 7If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. For Discussion • Thomas probably speaks for the whole group • They still don’t fully understand what’s about to happen • Another one of the “I AM” passages • Why the past tense? • “If you had known me ...” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. Show Us the Father • John 14:8-11 • 8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. For Discussion • What do you suppose that Philip is asking for in asking “show us the Father”? • Jesus reiterates His oneness with the Father • They are inseparable • One must believe that Jesus is in the Father • His works are simply those of the Father • Belief in the “works” is a “lesser” belief www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  13. Greater Works • John 14:12-15 • 12“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. 13Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.15If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  14. For Discussion • What greater works will the disciples do than have already been done? • What does it men to ask for something “in Jesus’ name”? • Is this some sort of formulaic system? • One must live according to Jesus’ pattern for anything tobe asked for in His name www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  15. The Helper-Advocate • John 14:16-17 • 16“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  16. For Discussion • The Father will always be with the disciples • If not in the form of Jesus, then as the Holy Spirit • Many translations use the term “Comforter” • A better translation is “Advocate” • i.e. a fiend in the legal business www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  17. Keep My Commandments • John 14:18-21 • 18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. 20In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  18. For Discussion • What is Jesus speaking of when He says “but you will see me”? • Near-term or long-term? • How will this affect their perception of Jesus? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  19. Why Only to Us? • John 14:22-24 • 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  20. For Discussion • What is Judas (Thaddeus) asking about? • What might he be thinking? • This appearance will be an internal, rather than external one www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  21. Do Not Be Troubled • John 14:25-28 • 25“These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  22. For Discussion • What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit? • What sort of peace does Jesus leave with His disciples? • Why should they be neither troubled or fearful? • How should that relate to us today? • Why should they rejoice in His departure? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  23. Now You Know • John 14:29-31 • 29“Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; 31but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  24. In Closing • Jesus is preparing His disciples for their separation from Him • He tells them what is about to happen • He promises the Holy Spirit • He promises answer to prayer www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
