  2. Landscape • China’s landscapes include mountains, high plateaus, sandy deserts and dense forests.

  3. Wildlife • China’s diverse habitats are home to hundreds of species of animals and plants. More than 3,800 species of fish and hundreds of amphibians and reptiles.

  4. Chinese history is divided into dynasties marked by a line of emperors. The last emperor was overthrown in 1912.

  5. China was ahead of the world for centuries in their advances in science, technology, astronomy and math. • A few important Chinese inventions are paper, the magnetic compass, printing, porcelain, silk, and gunpowder.

  6. People • China has more people than any other. Around 1/3rd of its population lives in cities with the remaining 2/3rd living in the country.

  7. Art has a long and important history in China. • The Chinese were some of the first to use silk, jade, bronze, wood, and paper in art making. • Calligraphy was also invented in China.

  8. Calligraphy The art of writing is a visual art form. Has been revered as a fine art long before painting.

  12. 学校的 Chinese Word Choose a word or phrase to translate in Chinese. You will need to take turns using the computers to look up translations. Draw the Chinese letters as neatly and the best you can. You will also need to represent your word visually with a drawing or collage. 挤进

  13. Chinese Landscapes • Chinese poets and painters have revered nature as a source of spiritual and artistic inspiration for thousands of years. Shen Zhou, Poet on a Mountain c. 1500.
