  2. Jay’s Treaty • 1795 • Cleared up trade problems still lingering after the Revolutionary War • Gave America “most favored nation” statues with Great Britain

  3. Pinckney’s Treaty • 1795 • Established intentions of friendship between the U.S. and Spain • Gave U.S. right to navigate the Mississippi and deposit goods at the port of New Orleans

  4. XYZ Affair • French seized American ships • Sent diplomats (known as X, Y, and Z) to bribe the U.S. in 1797 • Adams wanted to avoid war • Brief skirmish happened in 1798, became known as the Quasi-War

  5. Convention of 1800 • Signed between France and America • Ended the Quasi-War that had been going on since 1797

  6. Embargo Act of 1807 • Reaction to attacks and impressments of seamen • Placed a ban on trade with European countries • Actually hurt U.S. more than it helped • Was repealed in 1809

  7. Adams-Onis Treaty • 1819 • Signed between Spain and U.S. • Gave all of Florida to the U.S. • Finalized the western border of the Louisiana Purchase
