Timeline • 1787 - Constitutional Convention- held in Philadelphia to fix the Articles of the Confederation • 1787 - Federalist Papers- written by Hamilton and Madison to get states to ratify the constitution • 1789 - The First Inauguration • 1791 - Bill of Rights- First ten amendments to the Constitution, the citizen’s rights • 1794 - Whiskey Rebellion- Whiskey producers rebelled against the new tax on whiskey • 1798 - Alien and Sedition Acts- enacted by federalists to strengthen the federal government anti immigration/immigrant laws

Timeline Continued • 1801-1815 - Barbary Wars- pirate raids in the Mediterranean • 1803 - Louisiana Purchase / US Territories and Acquisition-Purchase of territory west if the Mississippi from France. • 1804 - Lewis and Clark- Explored the land west of the Mississippi • 1811-1814 War of 1812- War between Britain and France US aided France • 1811-1814 Creek War / All Indian Wars- Indian conflicts with settlers • 1820 - Missouri Compromise- Maine entered the Union as a free state Missouri entered as a slave state, and the 35° 30’ line (slavery permitted below this line) was created.

  4. Thomas Jefferson • President from 1801-1809 • Leader developing republicanism • Promoted ideals of an agrarian republic • Primary author of the Declaration of Independence

  5. Constitutional Convention • 1787 • Held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia • Called to fix the Articles of the confederation • Adopted what is now the Constitution

  6. Bill of Rights • 1791 • The first 10 amendments to the constitution • Added to appease the anti-federalists • Outlined the citizen’s personal freedoms

  7. Whiskey Rebellion • 1794 • Andrew Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury put a tax on whiskey • Whiskey makers on the frontier refused to pay the tax • Whiskey makers in Pennsylvania started a rebellion that Washington and the construction squashed

  8. 1787-1820 was a time for fixing the new born government. Politicians nixed the Articles of the Confederation and the US Constitution was born. This new constitution held even after being tested.
